180 Break-and-Enters in Just 31 Days Across Brampton and Mississauga

A staggering 180 break-and-enter incidents have been reported across Mississauga and Brampton between May 8 and June 7, according to Peel Regional Police. The numbers, evenly split between the two cities, highlight a sharp uptick in property-related crimes this spring.

The targeted properties spanned a wide range: 51 single-family homes, 10 apartment units, eight garages or sheds, nine restaurants, three schools, three stores, and even a gas station and two offices. A significant number, 71, were classified as break-ins at unidentified businesses, while 12 fell under the “other” category.

Certain locations saw a noticeable concentration of activity. Queen Street topped the list with 11 reported break-ins, followed by Dundas Street and Lakeshore Road, each with six, and Kennedy Road with five.

So far, investigations have resolved 38 of the cases. Four have been deemed unsolvable, and 138 remain under active investigation.

Peel Police say corner properties, homes backing onto parks or alleys, and residences that appear vacant are more likely to be targeted. “These are often crimes of opportunity,” the force explained. “Burglars look for easy access and minimal risk of being seen or caught.”

To help residents protect their homes, police recommend trimming overgrown shrubs, locking all garage and screen doors—even when home—and strengthening window and sliding door security. Building strong connections with neighbours can also serve as a powerful deterrent.

As investigations continue, police are urging residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity.
