Chandigarh: Now, the private schools which harass their students over non-payment of fees will face a 5-year jail term and a penalty of Rs 5 lakh. The concerned teacher or employee of the private school will be facing a 5-year imprisonment and a Rs 5 lakh fine in case they are found guilty of harassing their students who are not been able to pay their school fees.

The Punjab Education Department has issued written instructions in this regard to all the District Education Officers (DEOs).

This comes as a big relief as a number of suicides by poor students were reported in past who were harassed by their school teachers or managements for non-payment of their school fees. This year, a 14-year-old girl from Hyderabad reportedly committed suicide after school humiliated her for non-payment of fees.

Child Rights Organization  has demanded strict action and blamed school for her death. In 2017 also, a student from Lucknow has committed suicide allegedly because he was harassed by the school for non-payment of the fee. The mother of the deceased claimed that she could not pay the fee amounting to Rs 1020. The victim could not take it anymore and hanged himself from a tree on his way to school. The penal action will follow in the event of non-compliance of the provisions of the child rights in section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015.
