Ludhiana Police file 12 FIRs against ‘unidentified persons’ for flouting SC order on Diwali
Ludhiana Police filed 12 FIRs on Wednesday against unidentified persons for violating the Supreme Court’s order prohibiting the burning of crackers on Diwali after 10 pm. No arrests were made till the filing of this report.
The FIRs were registered under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of IPC. The Supreme Court had restricted the time for bursting crackers on Diwali between 8 pm to 10 pm amid deteriorating air quality levels in northern India.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ashwani Kapoor claimed that police did not receive any complaint naming a person due to which FIRs were registered against “unidentified persons”. DCP also said that it was “nearly impossible” to completely enforce such orders and identify each person who burst crackers after 10 pm.
“All SHOs were instructed to register FIRs as soon as they got any information of crackers being burst after 10 pm. But of all the calls we received, no complainant named any accused. They just informed about cracker bursting in their area. We will identify the accused during probe but practically it is nearly impossible to identify all those who burst crackers and enforce such bans completely,” said the DCP.
Meanwhile, local residents said that the top court’s order was flouted brazenly as cracker were burst till wee hours of Thursday. Alice Guram, a resident of Rajguru Nagar said, “I kept calling police control room but no one attended calls. Many people in our area continued to burn crackers till 12.30. Smoke entirely filled our home and it was difficult to breathe.”
Another resident, Gaurav Jindal, said, “When I woke up at around 6 am, crackers were still being burnt and my home was filled with smoke. There was a lot of noise pollution due to which my aged father could not even sleep properly throughout the night. It seems that no one cared two hoots for court orders- neither people nor policemen.”
