Amber alert issued for girl, 5, allegedly abducted by father in Markham, Ont.
MARKHAM, Ont. — An Amber alert has been issued for a five-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted by her father north of Toronto.
York regional police say officers were called Tuesday afternoon to Armadale Public School in Markham, Ont., where teachers say Jannah Jaffri was taken from her classroom by her father, Soloman Jaffri.
Police initially said the girl was picked up around 3 p.m. but later said they learned it was around 2 p.m.
Jaffri is not supposed to have access to the child but the school told investigators it did not have information to that effect at the time, police spokeswoman Const. Laura Nicolle said.
The pair were picked up by a minivan taxi and dropped off at a nearby location, where they got into another vehicle and headed in an unknown direction, Nicolle said.
“At that time, the child was safe,” she said.
Police did not immediately have information on the second vehicle but Nicolle said officers were scouring the area and appealing to any witnesses to come forward.
“The safety of a little girl, a child that’s missing, is a primary concern for us and we have a large number of resources devoted to this,” she said.
“We definitely have our helicopter up that’s searching the area, we have our canine units responding, we have officers in uniformed patrol, we have officers that are in undercover capacities — we’re essentially everywhere.”
The girl is described as a having brown skin, light brown shoulder-length hair and brown eyes wearing a pink sweater, white tank top, grey leggings, navy blue coat and carrying a sparkly white unicorn backpack.
Jaffri, 25, is described as having brown skin, average build, standing at 6-foot-1 with short brown hair and a tattoo on his right arm that says “Jannah” while wearing a navy blue dress coat and black cargo pants.
