Around 5000 Cineplex employees face lay-off due to Covid-19

The Canadian multiplex; Cineplex, has laid off around 5000 of its part-time employees. This decision came into place after theatres in Ontario were closed as per government guidelines on Wednesday, January 5.
A Cineplex spokesperson said that these job cuts are followed by “mandated closures of our theatre and entertainment venues across Ontario. From Wednesday, the largest cinema operator of Canada has shut down as Canadian provinces are going under different levels of lockdown to reduce the sudden spike in Covid-19 infections.
“We are eager to get our team back to work once and for all as soon as these temporary restrictions are lifted,” the statement added. Similar job cuts were done by Cineplex back in March 202o across Canada when the lockdown happened for the first time.
The laid-off employees will be able to qualify for and have the right to federal unemployment insurance. Cineplex will also give them a chance to get back on the team once Cineplex resumes its operations in the province. As Cineplex navigates the disruptive effects of the pandemic, the latest cost-cutting will help the company meet its debt obligations.
Cineplex has faced this situation of cinema closures earlier as well in Quebec as health advisors recommended tightened restrictions for COVID-19 hot spots. It included cinema closures in cities like Montreal and Toronto, where the spike in daily cases of the Omicron variant is significantly high.
