The ruler and president of the United Arab Emirates,  Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, died this Friday and announced UAE’s government in a brief statement. He was 73 years old at the time.

Sheikh Khalifa was one of the rulers who saw his country’s blistering economic growth. His name has also been immortalized on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Sheikh Khalifa had played a major role in pulling the country out of crippling debt and financial crisis, before a decade.

However, he suffered from a stroke in 2014 and ceased his involvement in the current affairs of the country.

The country has announced 40 days the mourning period and a three-day break from work all across the private and the government sector. They will also pull their flags down to be flown only at half-staff.

So far, there is no announcement for the name of the successor, though Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed is expected to be the next king.

“The UAE has lost a loyal son, and the leader of its blessed empowerment journey,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed wrote on Twitter. “Khalifa bin Zayed, my brother, supporter and mentor, may Allah Almighty grant you eternal peace.”
