Sania Mirza, Indian Tennis Player, announces retirement

Sania Mirza, a renowned athlete from India and the former Wimbledon doubles champion has shared that she will retire from the world of tennis after 2022. 

“I’ve decided that this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week. Not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,” shared the player. The athlete recently lost her first round in women’s doubles during the Australian Open. 

Sania Mirza was the first Indian who went on to win the WTA singles title back in 2005. But after her singles victory, Sania suffered from an injury. The athlete has been playing doubles since then. Last, she won the Wimbledon with Swiss player Martina Hingis, in 2015. She then took the US and Australian Opens. 

The athlete was on her way to win an Olympics medal during the 2016 bRio Olympics when she played alongside Rohan Bopanna. However, the duo lost to Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram in the semi-finals. 

The athlete also holds two Grand Slam titles to her name along with tennis partner Mahesh Bhupathi from the 2009 Australian Open mixed doubles title and the French Open 2012 mixed doubles.

The athlete had first started tennis as a hobby during her teenage years but soon made it a career as she won adult tournaments. Her first senior title was won in the 2002 Asian Games when she was just 15. 

In 2003, she entered the WTA Tour and now stands as the 27th highest singles ranking athlete in the world.
