513 drug smugglers held, Rs.14.80 lacs in drug money seized in busts across Punjab

Amid continuous scrutiny of the law and order situation in the state, Punjab Police is making strides in curbing the circulation of narcotics in Punjab. In the last two weeks alone, Punjab Police filed 405 FIRs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, detaining 513 persons in the investigation.

In a press conference on Monday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Headquarters Sukhchain Singh Gill informed the gathering that 42.36kg heroin, 18kg opium, 12kg marijuana, 900 Kgs of poppy husk, and 74,000 units of prescription medicines were confiscated in the last two weeks.Rs 14.80 lakh drug money was also seized from the possession of detained Drug smugglers and suppliers.

On Sunday alone, Punjab Police confiscated about 150 kgs of poppy husk from a truck in Pathankot. The truck driver and another person have reportedly been arrested in the case, which was filed under NDPS Act. The truck was allegedly coming to Punjab from Madhya Pradesh.

With an intent to continue the streak of drug racket takedowns, Director General of  Police (DGP), Punjab Gaurav Yadav has given strict orders to all the CPs/SSPs in the state asking them to identify and report prominent drug hotspots in their region. Additionally, Yadav has also asked the SSP/CPs to carefully examine every drug possession-related case, no matter how minute the amount of drugs confiscated may be.
