Former Mayor Lies in State; Funeral Tickets Now Available

After a month-long struggle with pancreatic cancer, McCallion, who spent 36 years as mayor of what is now Canada's seventh-largest city, passed away on January 29.

The state funeral for McCallion will be conducted at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga on Tuesday, Feb. 14, which would have been her 102nd birthday.

At 11 a.m., the service will be under way. The public is invited to show there at 10 a.m. The funeral will be attended by McCallion’s family, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Premier of Ontario Doug Ford, Secretary of the Cabinet of Ontario Michelle DiEmanuele, and Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, among other dignitaries.

Right up until she became ill, she was still an active member of several boards of directors, including the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.

McCallion will lie in state at Mississauga City Hall on Sunday and Monday before her funeral on Tuesday. The public is welcome to pay their respects, give their condolences, and bid the former mayor farewell throughout those two days from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Up until the evening of the funeral, books of condolence are still available for public signing at City Hall and throughout Mississauga.

The Hazel McCallion Charitable Foundation for Arts, Culture, and Heritage or Trillium Health Partners Foundation are the preferred charities for gifts in place of flowers, said the McCallion family.
