Even though England is experiencing a high-infection Covid-19 rate in the country, it is about to scrape off all the Covid-19 related restrictions this Thursday. The nation is taking this step in a bid to develop the habit of living with the virus from now on.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson made an announcement that from Thursday onwards, the country will move into a new phase of living with the virus.
This means that people who might contract the virus will no more have to self-isolate themselves legally, and the government will no more trace infected people’s contacts.
Starting from April 1, people experiencing Covid-19 related symptoms will only be motivated to exercise personal responsibility similar to what is expected to be done in cases of other normal cases of flu.
Mr Johnson said in his statement “We now have sufficient levels of immunity to complete the transition from protecting people with government interventions to relying on vaccines and treatments as the first line of defence.”
However, while Johnson’s government in Westminster is pushing these changes, authorities of Scotland and Wales are still having some regulations. It means currently only England will be free from all Covid-19 restrictions in the U.K.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 82.1% of adults in England have received three doses of the vaccine.
