While PM Modi and Russian President Putin have previously been spotted in friendly interactions across the globe, that might change now. Amidst the growing tensions between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, PM Modi has publicly condemned Russia’s invasion, possibly jeopardizing the relationship between Russia and India

Many world leaders have called out Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. World leaders kept Putin purposely waiting, which is Putin’s M.O. to assert his dominance
While highly unlikely and shocking, this incident was not an isolated one. Many world leaders at the SCO meet, directly or indirectly, have called out Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Russian President was publicly asked to explain himself by Xi Jinping, the president of China. Furthermore, Sadyr Japarov, The President of Kyrgyzstan, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, The President of Turkey, and, PM Modi all kept him publicly waiting for photo-ops. At first glance, one would chalk this incident up to logistic and scheduling issues, however, it is important to note that President Putin has a history of purposely keeping world leaders waiting at conferences and meets, something experts claim to be his Modus Operandi to assert dominance.
PM Modi’s gesture has been well received by the citizens and the diaspora alike, with Indian-American academic and lawmaker, Ro Khanna going as far as stating that PM Modi could contribute to a ‘peaceful resolution and a ceasefire’ between the nations.
In response to the comments made by PM Narendra Modi, Russia’s Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, stated, “India has so far taken a careful approach to this idea. It will not be beneficial to Indian interest.”
