Para powerlifter Sudhir Kumar gave India its sixth gold medal of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Thursday. Sudhir participated in the heavyweight category and cleared 208 and 212 kg in his first two attempts. In his third and final attempt he tried to clear 217 kg but failed. Twenty-seven-year-old Sudhir set a new Games Record by getting 134.5 points in his category.

The silver and bronze medals in the heavyweight category went to Nigeria and Scotland respectively as their powerlifters earned 133.6 and 130.9 points. This is the first medal for India in the para-athletes category. Since the medals won by para-athletes are counted towards total medals won by a nation, his medal has taken the Indian tally to six gold medals with a total of 20 medals. Earlier in the day long jumper Murali Sreeshankar won a silver in long jump.
