Trying to fly to Canada, dowry suspect nabbed from Delhi airport
Ludhiana: A woman, who acted as a mediator in arranging a marriage and was wanted in a dowry harassment and criminal conspiracy case, was arrested from Delhi airport by the Ludhiana rural police. She was allegedly fleeing to Canada to avoid arrest. The suspect has been identified as Sandeep Kaur, a native of Dhudeke, Moga, now a resident of Canada.
After investigating the complaint filed by Mandar Singh, the father of a Canada-based woman, regarding harassment for dowry by her daughter’s in-laws, a case of criminal conspiracy and harassment for dowry was registered at the Hathur police station on February 20. Those nominated in the FIR included the girl’s husband Sukhjit Singh and mother-in-law Harminder Kaur, both residents of Canada, and mediator Sandeep Kaur of Dhudeke, Moga.

In his complaint to the police, Mandar Singh of Hathur village, near Jagraon, stated that his daughter Jaswinder Kaur went to Canada in 2015 and was granted Permanent Residency (PR) of that country. Mandar Singh’s son Barinderpal Singh also lived in Canada and knew Sandeep Kaur, who became the mediator in the marriage. Apart from this, when Sandeep went to Canada, Barinderpal helped and supported her.

When Barinderpal asked Sandeep to find a suitable match for his sister Jaswinder Kaur, Sandeep recommended her cousin Sukhjit, living in Barnala. Sandeep also said Sukhjit possessed 10 acres of land and was a partner in an immigration firm, Oxford Immigration, at Raikot. Jaswinder and Sukhjit Singh got married in December 2021 following Sandeep’s assurance regarding the character of the boy and his family.

The girl’s family spent money lavishly to celebrate the wedding, with no expenses spared on jewellery, clothes and the function, as per the demands of the groom’s family. After marriage, Jaswinder moved back to Canada in March 2022. She was shocked when her in-laws demanded 28,000 dollars from her, with which they bought a car in India. When Sukhjit went to Canada, he started harassing Jaswinder and moved in with another woman, also demanding more dowry from Jaswinder.

Investigating officer ASI Manohar Lal said Sukhjit, his mother Harminder and the mediator Sandeep continually harassed Jaswinder and her family for dowry. A few days ago, Sandeep and her husband came to Punjab but she decided to flee to Canada after she learnt that a case was registered against her. A Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued to prevent her from leaving the country and due to this, when she tried to take a flight to Canada, the airport police alerted the Ludhiana police, whose team immediately reached there and arrested Sandeep.
