B.C.: 40-year-old Punjabi man charged with murder of wife

Following a fatal stabbing of a 40-year-old woman at her home in Surrey, British Columbia earlier this month, the victim’s husband, a 40-year-old Canadian-Sikh man, was charged with second-degree murder.

The accused, identified as Navinder Gill, was taken into custody by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in relation to the stabbing.

Gill was first taken in as a suspect the night of the incident but was later released. He was then rearrested and charged with the stabbing of his wife.

“On December 15, the suspect, now identified as 40-year-old Navinder Gill of Surrey, the husband of the victim, was once again arrested by IHIT investigators with the support of the Surrey RCMP,” a statement issued by Lower Mainland’s IHIT read.

“On December 16, a charge of second-degree murder was laid against Navinder Gill,” the statement continued.

The victim, identified as Harpreet Kaur, succumbed to life-threatening injuries after being stabbed fatally multiple times at her home in Surrey, British Columbia, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Kaur was found wounded after being subjected to multiple life-threatening stabbings a little before 9.30 pm on Wednesday in a home in the 12700-block 66 Avenue, the RCMP informed. She was consequently taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead after succumbing to the injuries.

“Any time that there’s an allegation of domestic violence, police take it very seriously,” Sgt. Timothy Pierotti had stated soon after the attack, hinting at the possibility of domestic violence.
