Though the escape bid did not last long, it left many intriguing questions unanswered. How can a suspect , already in handcuff, could doge the police officer and escape in a police SUV with two canines on board?

Inspector Craig Young called the incident “quite extraordinary.”

“It was an audacious move to take a police car and engage in this kind of activity, it’s just extraordinary, ” Inspector Young  was quoted  saying it in media reports.

The reports said that the suspect  who had already been overpowered and handcuffed in an early morning swoop managed to overpower  the Toronto police officer and steal his SUV, sending police on a wild chase in the midtown area on Monday.

Soon after the suspect managed to escape, an internal alert was sounded in the Toronto police as  officers were requisitioned to  join the hunt for the escapee.

The police were called to head to the corner of Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue  early in the morning as it located a male suspect and began to detain him.

While the police officer was in the process of arresting him, the suspect managed to overpower the arresting officer after handcuffs were placed on him. In a quick surprise action, the suspect with handcuffs on jumped into a police canine unit SUV before speeding away towards the west with police dogs sitting in the back of the vehicle.

The suspect then crashed the SUV after pulling  it into the parking lot of a Metro grocery store on the Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue area.

Before police could reach him, he attempted to break open one of  several cars  for his further escape. After he did not succeed, he reportedly flagged down a taxi to carjack it.

However, the police cornered and subdued him before taking him to a hospital where he was reportedly diagnosed with non-life threatening injuries. The taxi driver was also taken to the hospital. He had minor injuries.

Interestingly, the dogs were not harmed in the entire episode.

It was not clear whether the police would hold an internal investigation as to how a suspect in handcuffs could attempt an escape in a police SUV or treat it as an unprecedented event.
