The leader of the New Democratic Party in Canada, Jagmeet Singh, said in his latest statement that the Federal government had to invoke an emergency action in the state because all other levels of government did not take the convoy protest as a serious issue.

In his interview with a TV show, Mr. Singh said that the NDP Party voted in favour of the Emergency Act as the freedom convoy protesters posed a threat to Canada’s democracy and autonomy.

He further said that the situation in Ottawa was evidence of the failure of all levels of government to respond against the convoy, from Justin Trudeau to  Doug Ford to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

He made these remarks as the 185 ministers voted in favour of this act while 151 voted against it.

“This was not a protest. This was an occupation and a convoy bent on hurting working people, taking away people’s ability to work and harassing residents of a city that had to be shut down,” Singh said in his interview.

The final decision of invoking the Emergency Act was taken by the liberal government.

At that time, the NDP stood in favour of the act and Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois resisted the motion of the Emergency Act.
