Pope Francis to Visit Canada Next Month
Pope Francis will be fulfilling his promise to meet the indigenous people of Canada. He will be visiting three cities, which are, Edmonton, Quebec, and Iqaluit in the last week of July, from 24-30 July 2022.
While due to his health restrictions, he cannot travel for long hours and visit multiple locations, he is determined to come to the country as per his promise. He will be reiterating his apology to the indigenous.
Since 2002, this will be the first papal visit to Canada. After reaching Edmonton on July 24, he will be joining the survivors at the Ermineskin Indian Residential School in the community of Maskwacis south of the city. On the same day, he will also be visiting the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, which is an Indigenous church located in downtown, Edmonton.
Gilda Soosay, who is a member of the Samson Cree Nation said, ‘It’s a step forward to the path of healing for the Indigenous people. We have to look forward to what’s coming for our people, our grandchildren, and the children coming after that’
The next day, he is scheduled to attend a mass gathering at the Commonwealth Stadium. It will be open to the public and can hold a capacity of 65000 people.
On July 27, he will be traveling to Quebec City, to meet with the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. On July 28 he will be traveling to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre to attend another mass gathering of around 15000 guests. On July 29, Pope is scheduled to meet the indigenous leaders from Eastern Canada before he flies to Iqaluit.
Pope Francis has not been able to walk or stand, due it which his scheduled visits to Congo and South Sudan were canceled.
