Will the Olympian and ace sprinter of yesteryears, PT Usha, be the first woman President of the Indian Olympic Association? On the last day of filing nominations for the IOA elections to be held on December 10, PT Usha filed her nominations yesterday.
Though another Olympian and President of the Amateur Athletic Federation of India, Adil Sumariwala, was also considered as a possible candidate to head the IOA, PT Usha pre-empted his move by filing her papers. She later tweeted her candidacy.
PT Usha, who was nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha in July this year, if elected will become the first Olympian to head the mother sports body of Indian sports. At present, she runs an academy for budding athletes.
PT Usha, a multiple gold medallist in Asian Games missed an Olympic medal in 1984 when she finished fourth in the 400 m hurdles final.
It may be pertinent to mention that 2022 has seen a new trend in Indian sports with Olympians and former international sports stars taking to the sports administration. Early this year, Olympian Dilip Tirkey became the first player to head Hockey India. Before his election, the All-India Football Federation, too, elected a former international. Kalyan Choubey, as its President. India’s prime sports body, Cricket Board, is now headed by former Test allrounder Roger Binny. He succeeded the former Test opener Saurav Ganguly.
