A teenage boy has been arrested following a house fire in Mississauga that left a dog injured, according to Peel Regional Police.

The incident occurred on Thursday around 11:40 a.m. at a home on Atwater Avenue, near Lakeshore Road East and Hurontario Street. Authorities responded to reports of a residential fire, which has since been deemed intentional.

“No one was injured in the blaze, but the fire caused significant damage to the home’s interior,” said Constable Tyler Bell during a press briefing at the scene. He added that the teen, believed to be the only person present in the house along with the dog, was apprehended nearby.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services confirmed the fire had been extinguished, and the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal is conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.

The injured dog was transported to a local animal hospital for treatment. While reports suggested the dog may have been stabbed at the doorway, Bell stated that the claim is under investigation and could not be confirmed at this time.

Authorities have yet to announce charges against the teen, but Bell emphasized that the suspect is not believed to be a random individual. “This is not considered a random act or the work of an unknown suspect. The circumstances are strange, to say the least,” he noted.

The fire, which caused substantial structural damage, has left the local community shaken. Police are requesting privacy for the affected family as investigations continue.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact Peel Regional Police.
