Power had earlier been cut to the Chernobyl power plant on March 9. Ukraine’s Energy Minister had warned that Ukraine’s energy engineers were able to avert the risk of a possible nuclear catastrophe by risking their own health and lives as it had threatened the lives of whole of Europe. Russian forces had allowed Ukraine engineers to repair the damaged lines at that time and the UN atomic Energy body had issued statement that there was no critical impact on safety.

In the meantime, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba had called for Russia to urgently observe a temporary ceasefire in order to allow repairs on a power line to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant because radiation could be leaked if an electricity supply failure continues.

In 1986 disaster at Chernobyl nuclear plant had killed hundreds of people and spread radioactive contamination west across Europe.

This accident had destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firemen within three months and several further deaths later many people continued dying because of the radiation leaked from the reactor.

Russian troops also damaged the Europe’s biggest atomic power plant ‘Zaporizhzhia plant’ located in Ukraine, on March 4. That also had raised an alarm in Europe over a possible nuclear disaster. But this disaster was averted by Ukraine’s engineers after they were allowed by Russian forces to do the repair work immediately.
