Speed Limits Rising On Highway 401, QEW, 403 And More Ontario Routes

Ontario is preparing to raise speed limits on several major highways, with 938 kilometres of roadway moving from 100 km/h to 110 km/h, according to a CP24.com report.

The announcement is set to come Tuesday morning in King City, where Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria is expected to outline the latest phase of the province’s highway speed limit expansion.

Speed Limit Increase Starts Friday In Eastern Ontario

The first changes take effect Friday on selected sections of highways 401 and 416 in Eastern Ontario.

Further increases will follow by the end of September on additional stretches of Highway 401, the Queen Elizabeth Way, Highway 402, Highway 403, Highway 416 and Highway 417.

The move builds on earlier speed limit increases introduced across hundreds of kilometres of Ontario highways in 2022 and during the summer of 2024.

Ford Government Expands 110 km/h Highway Network

Premier Doug Ford said in the fall of 2024 that his government was reviewing more highway sections to determine where higher speed limits would be safe.

Sarkaria says the latest changes will help motorists reach their destinations faster and more safely.

The province estimates the higher limits could cut almost 20 minutes from a Sarnia-to-Toronto trip. A Toronto-to-Ottawa drive could be shortened by nearly 30 minutes.

Bradford Bypass And Highway 413 Planned For 110 km/h

The province is also designing the Bradford Bypass and Highway 413 with a 110 km/h speed limit in mind.

The rollout signals Ontario’s continued shift toward higher legal speeds on major highway corridors, while keeping the changes limited to routes the government says are suitable for faster travel.
