An Indian national was among two people killed when a small aircraft crashed near Deer Lake Regional Airport in Newfoundland shortly after takeoff on Saturday evening. The incident has prompted a multi-agency investigation and tributes from both Indian authorities and the aircraft operator.
The victim, identified as 27-year-old Gautam Santhosh, was confirmed dead at the scene along with the 54-year-old pilot. The aircraft, a Piper PA-31 Navajo registered to Kisik Aerial Survey Inc., had taken off for a local survey flight before crashing approximately one kilometre south of the airport, according to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
Emergency services closed a section of the Trans-Canada Highway near the airport for several hours to allow first responders and investigators access to the site. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed both individuals on board were deceased when crews arrived.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto released a statement mourning Santhosh’s death, calling it a “tragic loss.” “We are in touch with local authorities and the bereaved family to extend all possible assistance,” the Consulate said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.”
