The city is ramping up enforcement of waste bin rules with steep new fines. Residents who leave their garbage carts on the curb past 8 p.m. on pickup day, or store them in front-facing yards, can now face penalties starting at $250, doubling to $500 for a second offence and soaring to $750 for repeated violations.
These escalations are part of a broader city push. Garbage-related service requests made up 33% of all complaints in 2024, with 43% of penalties going to repeat offenders. In total, Brampton issued about 777 penalty notices, roughly 330 tied to improperly stored waste carts.
Council approved the changes in July, amending existing rules so enforcement officers, including summer students, can issue fines immediately, no more warnings or follow-ups.
Aman Sahota, a long-time Brampton resident, says:
“There’s garbage bins out so long they become magnets for squirrels and stray litter. These fines should finally get people to act responsibly.”
City staff emphasize that bins left long-term obstruct sidewalks, blow over in wind, and attract recycling litter. By making enforcement immediate and fines steeper, officials hope to shift behaviours more quickly.
Dave Nikle, another resident, added:
“Storing bins properly isn’t just aesthetics—it’s about safety and fairness. I’ve had sidewalk access blocked a few times. Now, people know the city means business.”
The new policies also build on earlier rule updates. In April, council increased penalties targeting overflowing bins and debris, and those measures remain in effect.
