Father Shot Dead Protecting Family in Vaughan Home Invasion, Premier Ford Calls Out Justice System

A Vaughan family faces tragedy after a violent home invasion claimed the life of a devoted father. In the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, at roughly 1 a.m., York Regional Police responded to a residence near Andreeta Drive and Barons Street following a call reporting a break-in and a seriously injured occupant. Inside, officers located 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi, who had sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators describe the incident as a targeted robbery. At least three masked intruders, clad in dark clothing, broke into the home. One assailant reportedly held Farooqi’s four-year-old daughter at gunpoint. Farooqi confronted the armed intruders to protect his family and was shot in front of his wife and children.

Neighbours, friends and colleagues of Farooqi expressed shock and grief. According to one staff member at his duct cleaning business, Unique Providers, “he was a very caring and very good father” whose death has left the family reeling. He was a respected member of Vaughan’s Muslim community. Police noted that officers who responded had known him for his community involvement and goodwill.

Premier Doug Ford denounced the escalating violence plaguing Ontario communities. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, he called the incident “heart-wrenching,” blaming Canada’s lenient criminal code for allowing offenders to reoffend. He described the crime as part of a broader crime surge, stating: “This innocent man… tried to protect them, and these scumbags shot him.”

York Regional Police request public assistance in identifying the suspects. Anyone with video evidence or tips is urged to contact the Homicide Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865 or [email protected]. Anonymous tips may be submitted via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
