Brampton Installs Safety Cameras at 50 Intersections to Help Peel Police Investigations

Brampton has completed the installation of new community safety camera technology at 50 intersections, expanding a citywide system aimed at helping Peel Regional Police investigate crime, serious incidents and road safety concerns.

The City announced Monday that the intersections now have 360-degree cameras and automated licence plate recognition technology. Officials say the system does not issue tickets and is not part of an automated traffic enforcement program.

Mayor Patrick Brown said the investment reflects Brampton’s effort to use technology and police partnerships to protect residents.

“Keeping residents safe continues to be our top priority. Working together with Peel Regional Police, we are leveraging technology and investing in community safety measures that help make Brampton the safest place to call home and the most inconvenient place in Canada for organized crime to operate. With these tools and partnerships in place, those looking to target our neighbourhoods will think twice knowing Brampton is taking a proactive, coordinated approach to protecting residents and supporting law enforcement,” Brown said.

Police Say Cameras Help Investigators Respond Faster

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said the cameras give officers and investigators timely access to information that can support frontline response and ongoing investigations.

“Public safety today requires us to evolve just as quickly as the challenges facing our communities. These cameras provide timely access to critical information that supports our frontline officers, investigators and operational teams in responding more effectively to incidents. Through our continued partnership with the City of Brampton, we are strengthening our collective ability to enhance safety and support our community,” Duraiappah said.

The City says Brampton is the first municipality in Canada to deploy this type of intersection camera system. The technology provides police with footage and licence plate information to support investigations and help bring justice to victims and families affected by crime and serious incidents.

Camera System Now Active at 50 Brampton Intersections

Brampton selected Genetec Inc., a Canadian security technology company, to supply video management and licence plate reader cameras. Axis Communications, a Swedish company and global camera technology firm, is providing the 360-degree cameras.

The City first installed the system at 19 intersections last spring. Since then, officials say the technology has assisted Peel Regional Police in more than 200 investigations, reinforcing its value as a public safety and road safety tool.

Public Support for Intersection Camera Technology

The expanded rollout also comes with public support, according to the City. During a recent telephone town hall, 84 per cent of participants said they supported using intersection camera technology to help police investigations and improve community safety.

Officials say the camera network complements other road and community safety efforts across Brampton, including traffic-calming measures, targeted enforcement and public education focused on safe driving behaviours.
