Excavators Deployed as Search Continues for Missing Trio After Fatal Brampton Fire; Mayor Flags Possible Illegal Unit

Brampton crews mobilized Friday to carefully dismantle a fire-damaged home as the search continues for three residents still missing following Thursday’s early morning blaze.

The fire broke out just after 2 a.m. near McLaughlin and Remembrance roads, sending multiple 911 calls to first responders. Some residents reportedly climbed to the roof in an attempt to escape. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and significant structural collapse, limiting access to parts of the house.

Two people were confirmed dead, and four others, including a child, were hospitalized. Peel Regional Police reported Friday that one patient remains in critical condition, while three—including a five-year-old—are stable. None are able to speak to investigators.

“Our city is grieving today. In the early hours of the morning, a devastating house fire claimed two lives, sent four residents to hospital, and left others unaccounted for,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire neighbourhood during this heartbreaking time.”

Fire crews and construction teams brought in excavators and cranes Friday to safely remove debris and allow investigators to access the collapsed structure. The Fire Marshal’s office said the work is part of a careful effort to continue the search and preserve evidence.

Mayor Brown noted the home had a history of compliance issues, with multiple city orders issued to enforce building and fire safety requirements. “While it is too early to determine the exact cause or whether fire code violations contributed, this tragedy underscores why Brampton continues to take strong action against illegal and unsafe rental units,” he added.

The mayor also praised the courage of residents who survived, highlighting a five-year-old child who leapt from the second floor. “Their bravery is nothing short of remarkable. Our community mourns together, and we will do everything we can to prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again,” Brown said.

Authorities estimate 11 people lived in the property. The search for the missing residents continues as the investigation into the cause of the fire proceeds.
