York Regional Police are warning residents after officers found hidden cameras on two Vaughan properties, devices investigators say were used to monitor homeowners’ routines before residential break-ins.
Police said the cameras, along with battery packs, were discovered on residential properties disguised with camouflage and hidden near trees and bushes. Investigators reviewed the footage and found the devices had been placed to watch when residents were coming and going, giving suspects a way to study daily patterns before carrying out break and enters.
The warning points to a troubling tactic in which homes are watched in advance rather than targeted at random. Police are now urging homeowners across Vaughan and the wider York Region to stay alert and report anything unusual around their property.
According to York Regional Police, the cameras were placed in concealed spots near landscaping and natural cover, making them harder for residents to notice. The use of camouflage suggests the suspects intended to leave the equipment in place long enough to build a clear picture of household routines.
Police have not released details about the exact locations of the two incidents, but the cases have prompted a public warning because of the potential for similar activity in other neighbourhoods.
Investigators are asking homeowners to watch for suspicious people, unusual objects or unfamiliar items placed around yards, trees, hedges and other parts of residential properties.
Police say residents should take any suspicious activity seriously, especially if something appears out of place near entry points or areas with a clear view of the home.
