506 Vehicle Thefts Reported in Mississauga and Brampton, Ontario
Peel police data indicates that from Feb. 9 to March 10, a combined 506 vehicle thefts were reported across both cities—269 in Mississauga and 237 in Brampton.
The car thefts are a major concern from the last few months and Mississauga and Brampton are the main targets. Peel police data indicates that from Feb. 9 to March 10, a combined 506 vehicle thefts were reported across both cities—269 in Mississauga and 237 in Brampton. As of today, only ten vehicles are recovered. 478 vehicles are being investigated and 18 are still unsolved.
The report states that out of the stolen vehicles, 362 are automobiles (cars), 138 trucks, four motorcycles and two are simply listed as “others.” The most targeted hotspots this month for the carjacking are City Centre Drive, Great Lakes Drive, Terminal Three Road and Viscount Road.
There is a significant change in the car theft cases in Brampton and Mississauga as compared to last year at the same time. Peel police data reveals that in January, the region experienced 655 vehicle thefts with an additional 683 reported in February, reflecting a slight increase of approximately 4.27%.
However, a slight decrease in the car theft cases compared from January 2024 to March 2024. A case was reported where a woman was assaulted and her car was taken away while leaving her vehicle to pick up her mail near City Centre in Mississauga. The Peel police advises the locals to take regulatory measures.
Some helpful tips are being shared by the Peel Police to prevent residents from falling victim to auto thefts:

If possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage, as most vehicles have been stolen from driveways.

Use a steering wheel lock. It will also act as a visible deterrent.

Install a lock on the data port. This simple device can be purchased online and blocks access to the computer port where the thieves gain access to reprogram the vehicle’s keys.

Consider purchasing a quality video surveillance system. Ensure cameras are properly placed and functioning for day and night use. Familiarize yourself with the system so it can be reviewed and assessed immediately.
