The City of Brampton is taking a strong stance against noisy vehicles and illegal modifications performed by auto shops. The City Council has recently authorized City staff to make changes to Brampton’s noise bylaws, which includes updating how the City tracks complaints related to loud vehicles. Currently, complaints about loud vehicles are grouped under the category of loud music, which has seen a sharp increase in complaints over the past few years.

To address this issue, Councillor Rowena Santos proposed changes to the bylaws. The City Council has approved City staff to propose changes that will add loud vehicles to their own category, making it easier to track and address complaints. Moreover, the City will also set a decibel limit for vehicles and bring its bylaws in line with the Highway Traffic Act, which prohibits the use of modifications like a straight exhaust or gutted muffler.

Furthermore, the City is also considering licensing auto shops to ensure that prohibited mufflers are not installed on vehicles in Brampton. The proposed changes to the bylaws will complement Peel Regional Police’s upcoming campaign, Project Noisemaker, which will begin in May and continue until October. This police noise blitz will target noisy drivers and illegal modifications performed by auto shops.

The City of Brampton will keep the community updated about the proposed bylaw changes and any licensing requirements. It is a proactive move by the City to address the concerns raised by residents and ensure that everyone can enjoy a peaceful environment without being disturbed by the noise from loud vehicles. By implementing these changes, the City hopes to create a safer and more comfortable environment for all its residents.
