Extreme Heat Grips GTA, Forcing FIFA Watch Party Cancellation In Toronto

The Greater Toronto Area remains under an intense heat wave, with humidex values expected to reach the low 40s and public officials warning residents to limit outdoor activity, check on vulnerable people and use cooling spaces when needed.

Toronto is under a heat warning as hot and humid conditions continue across southern Ontario. Environment Canada’s Toronto forecast showed temperatures reaching the low-to-mid 30s on Thursday, July 2, with humidity making conditions feel far hotter. The agency’s Toronto readings at Pearson International Airport showed the temperature had already reached 32.4 C by noon.

The dangerous conditions have already affected major public events. The City of Toronto cancelled FIFA World Cup 2026 match broadcasts at Nathan Phillips Square on Thursday, citing the extreme heat forecast and the resources needed to safely manage large crowds at fan marches, Toronto Stadium and FIFA Fan Festival Toronto.

The FIFA Fan Festival at Fort York remained scheduled to open for ticket holders, with added heat relief measures including misting stations, shaded cooling areas, free drinking water trailers and on-site medical support.

The City of Toronto says more than 500 cooling spaces are available across the city, including libraries, community centres, civic buildings, pools, splash pads, selected malls and partner facilities. A 24-hour cooling space is also open at 136 Spadina Road.

Toronto Public Health advises residents to drink water before feeling thirsty, wear loose and light-coloured clothing, avoid direct sun and move outdoor plans to the morning or evening when possible.

Storm Risk Builds With Heat And Humidity

Forecasters say the heat and humidity also raise the risk of showers and thunderstorms through Saturday. Western parts of the GTA and nearby communities, including Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton and Niagara, face the potential for heavy downpours and frequent lightning.

Temperatures are expected to stay above 30 C into the weekend, though lower humidex values should bring some relief by Sunday.
