Members of Parliament are scheduled to return to the House of Commons on Monday to hold its first session of 2023.

PM Justin Trudeau stated last week that the Liberal government would concentrate on the cost of living as well as targeted supports for Canadians amid inflation in the country. The state of financial pinch can, in part, be attributed to both the three years of unrest owing to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Cabinet ministers in the PM Trudeau-led government had previously held a retreat in Hamilton to plan out their political strategy ahead of the parliament’s return in the new year.

The NDP intends to focus on pushing the liberal party to fulfill the conditions of the supply and confidence agreement between the parties. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also stated that the party would focus on calling upon an emergency meeting to discuss the privatization of healthcare in the country, according to media outlets.

According to media reports, The Pierre Poilievre-led Conservative party plans to focus on getting the government to curb its spending as federal politics kicks off for the new year.

The anticipated negotiations between the federal and provincial governments regarding the share of each government in the healthcare sector is also likely to be brought up for discussion.
