An intense 6-alarm industrial fire broke out on Vulcan Street, in north Etobicoke region shortly after midnight on Friday, the Toronto Fire Services said in a tweet.

Emergency services were called just after 1 a.m. ET, and at at its peak, more than 100 firefighters were battling the blaze, Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop told reporters at the scene.

“This was one of the more significant fires that we have seen in this city in the last number of years.” Jessop said. No injuries have been reported so far.

A number of streets in the area were shut down and Jessop said that given the intensity of the fire and the sensitivity of the materials surrounding it, it can be expected that flares would keep going up and firefighters would remain on the scene during the weekend.

Toronto Fire Services said the incident is being treated as a “full hazardous materials response,” due to a high number of combustibles on site, including “thousands of litres of lubricants” and a neighbouring lumberyard. All adjacent businesses in the area would remain closed for the day.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and police will begin investigating the cause of the fire soon, Jessop added.
