U.S. President Donald Trump will send approximately 800 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., to assist local law enforcement. He announced the move during a Monday press conference, framing it as part of his broader push to “restore law and order” in the nation’s capital.
The Guard members will take on support roles including logistics, transportation, and facility security, mirroring the deployment of California National Guard units in Los Angeles earlier this year. While they will not have arrest powers, a military police unit could be tasked with holding suspects until local police arrive.
Trump has repeatedly described crime in Washington as “totally out of control,” despite official figures showing the city recorded its lowest crime rate in three decades last year. In recent days, he has used the assault of a Trump administration staffer to argue that the capital has become unsafe. At a Monday event, he vowed that “Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR,” promising decisive federal action.
This latest move follows last week’s deployment of federal law enforcement officers throughout the city. In February, Trump even floated the idea of a federal takeover of Washington’s police operations, citing what he called failures in local governance.
The National Guard activation is the most recent step in Trump’s escalating security measures in the capital, which have drawn both support and criticism. Supporters say the president is taking bold action to protect federal workers and residents, while critics argue he is politicizing public safety and ignoring long-term crime trends.
A second military official said the Guard mission will closely resemble California’s earlier deployment, with troops providing backup so police officers can remain focused on direct law enforcement duties. The White House has yet to provide a detailed timeline for when the troops will arrive.
