The suspect is 40-year-old, Vishal Sharma, from the Town of East Gwillimbury. This initiative comes in the wake of an unsettling incident involving a woman being pursued and intimidated by a man brandishing a knife within the City of Vaughan.
At 10:30 p.m. on August 17, 2023, the York Regional Police received an emergency call (9-1-1) from a female individual who reported a distressing encounter with a knife-wielding man. The adult woman, accompanied by another female companion, was travelling through the vicinity of Highway 7 West and Martin Grove Road when an unfamiliar male approached on foot.
This male, subsequently identified as the suspect, attempted to initiate a conversation and offered the women a ride home, which they promptly declined. Despite their refusal, the suspect persisted in following them to a bus shelter. Following the departure of one woman on a bus, the suspect zeroed in on the remaining victim. He menacingly revealed a knife and endeavored to coerce her into accompanying him. Swiftly responding to her instincts, the victim evaded the danger, promptly contacting the police for assistance. Law enforcement officers swiftly located the suspect within the vicinity. A brief foot chase ensued, culminating in the apprehension of the suspect.
The apprehended individual had been operating a red 2010 Ford F150 pickup truck, which was subsequently discovered parked at a nearby gas station.
