Punjab Police confirmed the arrest of Manpreet Singh, 27, in Sangrur in connection with the murder of Amanpreet Kaur Saini, a native of Sangrur who lived and worked in East York, Toronto. Canadian police had earlier launched a search for the suspect following the killing in Ontario.
Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police Sartaj Singh Chahal said coordination with Canadian authorities played a key role in tracking the accused. “Our police team had informed Canadian authorities that he could be hiding in India. We traced his movement in Sangrur following a tip-off,” Chahal said.
Investigators said Amanpreet Kaur, 27, was stabbed more than 30 times. During questioning, Manpreet Singh confessed to the crime, stating he attacked the victim after she rejected repeated marriage proposals.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Devinder Attri said Amanpreet moved to Canada in 2020 after completing a nursing course and later obtained permanent residency. Manpreet Singh, originally from Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh, arrived in Canada in 2022 and worked as a taxi driver. Police said failure to secure permanent residency led to mounting pressure on the victim to marry him.
Amanpreet’s father, Inderjit Singh, told police his daughter reported harassment and pressure in October 2025. Contact with her ended on October 21, prompting the family to alert Canadian authorities. Her sister, Gursimran Kaur, reported Amanpreet missing after learning she never reached her workplace. Police later found the body near Niagara Falls in Ontario. DSP Attri said the fatal injury involved a knife wound to the neck.
After returning to India, the accused allegedly issued threats to the family through WhatsApp and Instagram. Police said he visited the family home in Sangrur multiple times, posed for selfies outside the residence, and circulated morphed images using fake social media accounts. A cybercrime case was registered on January 14, followed by his arrest on January 15.
Inderjit Singh has demanded strict punishment. Punjab Police said formal communication with Canadian authorities is underway, with extradition proceedings expected. The investigation continues under senior police supervision.
