IHIT Releases Victim’s Name to Advance Investigation
On Tuesday, IHIT publicly identified the victim as Gaurav Deol, a Surrey resident. Police said victim names are not released in every homicide case, but investigators chose to do so in this case to help move the investigation forward.
Police believe the shooting was targeted and gang-related, though investigators said the case remains in its early stages. IHIT is working with Surrey Police Service, RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit, Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service.
Burned SUV Linked to Surrey Shooting
About 25 minutes after the shooting, police received reports of a vehicle fire in the 10600 block of Salisbury Drive. Investigators later recovered a burned white Toyota SUV, which they believe was used in the shooting.
“This is a tremendously difficult time for the victim’s family, and IHIT investigators are working with them to understand his lifestyle and activities leading up to the shooting,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “A lot of work is underway as we continue an extended canvass for witnesses and video at both the shooting and arson scenes.”
Police Seek Witnesses and Dashcam Video
IHIT is asking anyone who was near either scene between 10:00 p.m. on May 30, 2026, and 1:00 a.m. on May 31, 2026, to come forward. Investigators are especially seeking witnesses, surveillance video and dashcam footage.
