The City of Brampton has outlined the next phase of its Residential Rental Licensing Pilot Program (RRL), following the closure of the initial registration fee waiver period. Effective from July 1 to September 30, landlords participating in the program will benefit from a 50% discount on registration fees, reducing them from $300 to $150. The response has been substantial, with nearly 2,000 registrations received thus far.

Focused on enhancing community safety, the RRL requires landlords in designated wards (1, 3, 4, 5, and 7) to register their rental units. This initiative aims to uphold property standards and enforce fire safety regulations, fostering a safer living environment for residents.

In the upcoming phase, the City plans to intensify enforcement measures to ensure compliance with the RRL. City Council has approved a structured fine system for non-compliance, starting at $600 for a first offence, escalating to $900 for a second offence, and reaching $1,200 for subsequent violations.

Continuing its commitment to community safety, Brampton’s Enforcement and By-law Services, alongside Fire Prevention authorities, will prioritize education and conduct inspections. These efforts respond to resident concerns and address past issues related to property maintenance standards and fire safety compliance.

The City will provide ongoing updates as the RRL pilot program evolves. Landlords in wards covered by the program (1, 3, 4, 5, and 7) must obtain licenses for properties containing one to four rental units. To facilitate compliance and address community concerns promptly, residents can submit service requests to By-law Enforcement through various channels, including the 311 Brampton app, online at 311brampton.ca, or by calling 3-1-1. In-person services are also available at designated locations across the city.

Recently, Brampton announced the recruitment of 38 new By-law Enforcement Officers and two support positions. This expansion aims to bolster the city’s capacity to respond to service requests effectively, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining high living standards for residents and businesses alike.

By understanding and adhering to these by-laws, residents contribute to a cleaner, safer community and ensure the quality of public spaces. For more information on Brampton’s by-laws and initiatives, residents and landlords can visit Brampton.ca/bylaws.
