Early in the morning at around 5:30 am on February 18, Border Security Force troops deployed in the Gurdaspur Sector, after a gunfight with Pakistani smugglers, successfully managed to foil an attempt at cross-border drug smuggling, confiscating narcotics, as well as arms and ammunition in the process, according to media reports.

At Shikar Border Outpost near Dera Baba Nanak in the Gurdaspur sector early Saturday morning, troops of the force identified suspicious activity from individuals, reportedly armed, on both sides of the border. Consequently, the BSF troops attempted to challenge the individuals, in response to which miscreants from the Pakistani side of the International Border shot at the troops, according to media reports.

“In prompt action, the BSF personnel fired towards Pakistani smugglers beyond the border fence. However, the smugglers managed to run away taking advantage of the dense fog. The Pakistani smugglers also fired two bursts, but no one was hurt. The area was cordoned off and police and concerned sister agencies were informed,” a BSF spokesperson stated, according to media outlets.

Taking to Twitter to detail the incident, the official BSF account tweeted, “In the wee hours, alert #BSF troops of @BSF_Punjab in Sector Gurdaspur recovered following items after an armed encounter with smugglers:

1. 20 pkts suspected to be heroin

2. 02 pistol (made in Turkey & China)
