Fake Auto Insurance Slips Sold On Instagram, Ontario Regulator Warns Drivers

Ontario’s insurance broker regulator is warning drivers about an alleged social media scam involving fake electronic proof of auto insurance documents, commonly known as “pink slips,” being sold through Instagram.

The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) says it has received multiple consumer complaints about an individual allegedly posing as a licensed insurance broker, collecting payments by e-transfer, and sending consumers insurance documents that appear legitimate but are not linked to real auto insurance policies.

RIBO says the person has used names and accounts including “Insurebyraman,” “Insurancewithraman” and “raman_insurance77” on Instagram. The regulator also listed the phone number (437) 375-6281 and email addresses [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] as contact details consumers should avoid.

According to RIBO, victims were shown screenshots of a real broker’s licence to build trust. The individual then allegedly requested payment by e-transfer. After payment, consumers received electronic pink slips that looked valid.

In several cases, insurers later confirmed no policy existed. RIBO says licensed brokerages and insurers have also confirmed the documents are fake and that a real broker’s identity was being impersonated.

Driving without valid insurance in Ontario can expose motorists to serious financial and legal consequences. A fake pink slip does not provide actual coverage, even if the document appears authentic.

RIBO is advising consumers never to send e-transfers to personal email addresses for insurance coverage. Drivers should also be cautious of insurance offers made only through social media and should verify brokers through RIBO’s official licensee directory before making payments.

Consumers should also confirm their policy directly with the insurance company before driving.

Anyone who believes they may have been affected should contact their insurer, RIBO at [email protected], and local police.

RIBO says the warning is being issued to prevent further harm while the matter continues to be investigated.
