The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is set to experience its most significant snowfall of the season this weekend, with up to 10 cm expected across southern Ontario. This marks a dramatic shift in weather patterns, as the region has largely avoided heavy snow this winter, unlike northern areas such as Barrie and Muskoka.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, a low-pressure system will sweep across the lower Great Lakes, bringing steady snowfall beginning Saturday afternoon. The system, identified as a Colorado low, is expected to move in from the southwest, leading to widespread accumulation across the GTA, including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton Region, Durham Region, and beyond.

Officials at Toronto Pearson Airport have already begun preparations, stating they are bracing for “what could be the biggest snowstorm of the season.” The Weather Network has indicated that the snowfall will likely be lighter and fluffier due to the cold temperatures, with highs reaching -4°C on Saturday and 0°C on Sunday, while nighttime lows could plummet to -11°C.

The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight into Sunday, affecting not only the GTA but also Hamilton, Niagara Region, and eastern Durham. Weather experts caution that colder-than-average conditions could persist through mid-to-late February, with the potential for additional significant snowfalls.

As the storm approaches, commuters and travelers are urged to stay updated on weather alerts, drive cautiously, and prepare for possible disruptions.
