‘Sholay’s Jailer’ Govardhan Asrani Dies at 84 in Mumbai

Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani passed away in Mumbai on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 84. His nephew confirmed the news, adding that the last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium in the presence of close family members.

According to his personal assistant, Babubhai, Asrani had been admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days earlier due to age-related complications. “From what the doctors told us, there was fluid accumulation in his lungs. He passed away today, October 20, around 3:30 p.m.,” Babubhai told India Today.

His family, honouring his wish for a simple farewell, kept the funeral private. His wife, Manju Asrani, and other relatives are expected to release a formal statement soon.

Asrani, who remained humble despite decades of fame, lived quietly away from media attention. Hours before his passing, he had shared Diwali greetings on Instagram, leaving fans deeply saddened. He is survived by his wife and son, Naveen Asrani, who is a dentist based in Ahmedabad.

Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani grew up in a Sindhi Hindu family and developed a passion for acting early in life. After studying at St. Xavier’s School and briefly working with All India Radio, he moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream. Encouraged by filmmakers Kishore Sahu and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune and graduated in 1966.

Asrani made his screen debut with Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan (1967), but it was Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam(1969) that marked his breakthrough. Over the next five decades, he appeared in more than 350 films, including Sholay, Bawarchi, Namak Haraam, Chupke Chupke, and Abhimaan.

He became one of Bollywood’s most beloved comedians of the 1970s and 1980s, known for his perfect comic timing and memorable characters. His portrayal of the eccentric jailer in Sholay remains one of Indian cinema’s most iconic roles.

With his passing, Indian cinema has lost a performer who brought joy to generations. Govardhan Asrani’s legacy will live on through the countless smiles he inspired on screen.
