U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra abruptly cancelled a scheduled appearance at a major conservative networking conference in Ottawa on Friday after being called to Washington for urgent meetings with White House officials.
Hoekstra was expected to speak at the 2025 Canada Strong and Free Networking Conference, where he was scheduled to appear in a fireside chat with Adam Bolek, CEO of The Canada Strong and Free Network. Organizers announced the cancellation just over an hour before the ambassador was set to take the stage.
“Today’s programming has been adjusted as Ambassador Hoekstra was called to D.C. for urgent meetings,” said Alex Spence.
The U.S. Embassy to Canada confirmed Hoekstra was in Washington this week with a business delegation attending the SelectUSA Investment Summit, an annual event aimed at promoting foreign investment in the United States.
An embassy spokesperson said Hoekstra had “important meetings” with senior White House officials on Friday. The embassy did not provide further details about the meetings or explain why the Ottawa appearance was cancelled on short notice.
The spokesperson also did not say whether the meetings were connected to Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement discussions, as trade relations between Ottawa and Washington remain under close watch.
Hoekstra’s sudden cancellation comes at a sensitive time for Canada-U.S. relations, with trade, border security, defence spending, energy policy, and cross-border investment among the major issues facing both governments.
His planned appearance at the Canada Strong and Free conference would have offered one of his more prominent public speaking opportunities in Ottawa. The event brings together conservative politicians, policy leaders, business figures, and commentators from across the country.
No new time has been announced for Hoekstra’s appearance, and organizers did not immediately say whether the fireside chat would be rescheduled.
For now, the embassy has only confirmed the ambassador’s Washington meetings were considered important enough to pull him from Friday’s Ottawa program at the last minute.
