Toronto police are investigating after gunfire struck the U.S. Consulate in the city’s downtown core early Tuesday morning, prompting road closures and a major police response near one of the busiest intersections in the city.
Investigators say someone discharged a firearm at the diplomatic building near University Avenue and Queen Street West at about 5:30 a.m. Officers arrived shortly afterward and confirmed evidence that a firearm had been fired at the site.
Police said no injuries were reported following the incident.

Road Closures in Downtown Toronto
The police response has led to traffic disruptions in the downtown core. Southbound lanes of University Avenue remain closed between Queen Street West and Dundas Street while officers conduct their investigation near the consulate.
The closures affect one of the city’s key north south routes through the downtown district and may remain in place while investigators complete their work at the scene.
Authorities have not yet said whether the shooting is believed to be targeted or random.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area around 5:30 a.m. or who has information related to the incident to contact investigators. The investigation remains active as officers work to determine who fired the shots and why the diplomatic building was targeted.
