Toronto and the broader GTA are facing a disruptive midweek storm that is set to affect both the morning and evening commutes. Residents are dealing with a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain as a winter storm warning takes effect across the region. Environment Canada says some areas could experience several hours of freezing rain before conditions improve later in the day.
The agency reports that five to 15 centimetres of snow are expected across parts of the GTA. Areas northwest of Toronto will face the worst conditions, where an active freezing rain warning signals a higher risk of ice accumulation. Neighbouring regions west of the city are also expected to see longer stretches of freezing rain that may slow travel on major routes.
The storm strengthened through the morning, with OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirming that freezing rain and ice pellets were already falling across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. He urged drivers to prepare for slick roads, limited visibility and extended travel times throughout the day.
City of Toronto crews have been working since early morning to prepare key routes ahead of the storm. Salt has been applied to hills, bridges, intersections, expressways and major roads to reduce the risk of ice buildup. Officials say operations will continue through the day as precipitation changes between snow and freezing rain.
School bus services have been cancelled in multiple regions, including Toronto, due to worsening conditions. Boards say the decision was made to protect students from unpredictable weather and hazardous road conditions.
The storm is expected to ease by Wednesday evening, but officials advise residents to monitor forecasts, adjust travel plans and use caution until temperatures rise and roads clear.
