GTA Hit by Brutal Cold as Wind Chill Drops to -30

Toronto woke up to one of the harshest mornings of the winter on Friday as extreme cold tightened its grip across the Greater Toronto Area. Environment Canada recorded a wind chill of -30 early in the morning at Toronto Pearson International Airport, the first time this level has been reached this winter season.

The bitter cold made for a difficult start to the day for commuters and early risers. Temperatures remained far below seasonal norms, with frost forming quickly on exposed surfaces and sidewalks largely empty during the early hours.

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning for Toronto, citing dangerous conditions across the city. Forecasters said frostbite risk rises within minutes when wind chill values drop below -27. Residents were urged to limit time outdoors and cover exposed skin.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach a high of -13 degrees Celsius, nearly 11 degrees colder than the normal high for late January. With the wind, it is expected to feel closer to -21 by the afternoon. Overnight wind chill values are forecast to dip again toward the high minus twenties.

In response to the cold snap, the City of Toronto activated all available warming centres across the city. Eight locations are open to provide heated indoor space, washrooms, and basic support for people who need relief from the cold.

City officials are asking residents to check on neighbours, seniors, and anyone who may be vulnerable during extreme weather. Outreach teams are also monitoring conditions and directing people indoors where possible.

The Toronto Transit Commission reported service running as scheduled Friday morning, though officials warned the cold adds challenges for both riders and equipment. Commuters were encouraged to check real time vehicle locations before leaving home and allow extra travel time.

Some residents said dressing in layers and staying indoors remains the safest approach. Heavy winter coats, insulated boots, gloves, and face coverings were common sights on city streets.

Forecasters say the deep freeze is expected to continue through the day and into the night, with only gradual improvement expected over the weekend. Until then, officials stress caution, preparation, and awareness as the region endures one of its coldest stretches of the season.
