A shocking classroom shooting has left a physics teacher hospitalized after being attacked by his own student at a private school in Udham Singh Nagar district in India.
Police confirmed that Gagandeep Singh Kohli, who teaches physics at Guru Nanak School, was shot by a student on Wednesday morning. The attack occurred shortly after a mid-morning break when the teacher was leaving the classroom.
According to investigators, the student, identified as 14-year-old Samarath Bajwa, concealed a pistol inside his lunch box before entering school. Witnesses said he pulled out the weapon and opened fire at Mr. Kohli, striking him in the back. The bullet lodged near the neck.
The teacher was rushed to a private hospital where emergency surgery was performed. Dr. Mayank Agarwal, leading the medical team, confirmed that the bullet was successfully removed and Mr. Kohli’s condition is now stable. He has been shifted to the ICU for close monitoring.
School staff quickly overpowered the student as he attempted to flee. He was handed over to local police, who have since registered a case under Section 109 of the Indian Penal Code. Authorities have also seized the firearm and are investigating how the teenager obtained access to it.
Police officials said the motive appears linked to an earlier incident in which the teacher had disciplined the student by slapping him earlier this week. Investigators are now tracing the source of the weapon and examining possible lapses in school security.
The case has sparked concerns over student violence, campus safety, and illegal access to firearms in Uttarakhand.
